The UPI Card Problem (And How KreditPe Fixed It)

Most UPI cards give 1.5% with minimum transaction limits and paid subscriptions. Here's one that gives up to 5% from Rs 10.

Here is the problem with UPI cards.

First, the rewards are too low. With 1-1.5% cashback, forget about free flights. You will not even cover a decent meal.

Second, to increase that reward rate, many cards require a paid subscription.

Third, most cards have a minimum transaction value. Your Rs 60 auto ride or Rs 20 chai gets nothing.

Why I dismissed UPI cards

Until recently, I told everyone to skip UPI cards entirely. The math never made sense.

You pay a subscription fee. You hit minimum transaction limits. You still get weak returns. Better to use a regular credit card with proper rewards for large purchases and just accept that small transactions are not worth optimizing.

But the landscape has changed.

What changed: KreditPe YesBank Ace

KreditPe has partnered with YES Bank to issue a RuPay credit card that actually addresses the UPI card pain points.

The core proposition:

  • 3% cashback on all UPI spends through KreditPe app
  • Spend Rs 25,000+ in a month and that jumps to 5%
  • Minimum transaction: Rs 10
  • Annual fee: Lifetime free
  • No subscription required

Let me break this down properly.

The 3% base rate

When you link this card to the KreditPe UPI app and make payments, you earn 3% cashback. Not points that require complicated redemption. Cashback.

3% on UPI is exceptional. Most RuPay credit cards linked to UPI earn 1-1.5% on UPI transactions. The HDFC Tata Neu Infinity (widely considered one of the better UPI cards) gives 1.5% on UPI.

KreditPe doubles that baseline rate.

The 5% milestone

Spend Rs 25,000 in a month through KreditPe UPI and your rate increases to 5% for that month.

Rs 25,000 monthly spend is Rs 300,000 annually. That is achievable for most middle-class households when you route all small purchases through UPI: groceries, vegetables, auto rides, parking, metro, chai, street food, chemist bills, utility bills.

At 5%, you are earning Rs 15,000 per year in cashback on Rs 3 lakh annual spend. That is real money.

The minimum transaction matters

Most reward-earning cards have minimum transaction limits. HDFC's SmartBuy has Rs 500 minimum for accelerated rewards. Many UPI cards require Rs 100-200 minimum per transaction to earn rewards.

KreditPe's Rs 10 minimum means virtually every transaction qualifies. The Rs 15 parking fee. The Rs 30 lassi. The Rs 50 auto ride. All earn 3-5%.

Small transactions add up. If you make 200 small transactions per month averaging Rs 100 each, that is Rs 20,000 in monthly spend. At 5%, that is Rs 1,000 monthly cashback just from small purchases you would make anyway.

How the cashback works

KreditPe cashback is not credited as statement credit or bank transfer. It accumulates in your KreditPe app wallet.

You can use the cashback for:

  • 7% instant discount on digital gold purchases through KreditPe
  • Discounts on brand vouchers (Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Dominos, Myntra, MakeMyTrip)
  • Bill payments and recharges

The voucher discounts are often 40-50% off face value when combining cashback. So your 5% UPI cashback can effectively become 7-8% when redeemed for discounted vouchers.

The additional benefits

  • 5% cashback on DigiGold purchases through KreditPe
  • 1% fuel surcharge waiver at all fuel stations
  • YES Bank reward points on offline and online card swipes (separate from UPI cashback)
  • Rs 1,000 joining bonus (credited as cashback)

The fuel surcharge waiver is standard but still valuable. If you spend Rs 5,000 monthly on fuel, you save Rs 600 annually in surcharges.

The JCB network angle

The KreditPe YesBank Ace runs on the JCB network with RuPay interoperability. This is unusual.

JCB is a Japanese payment network with strong presence in Japan, Southeast Asia, and parts of Europe. For domestic use, the RuPay integration handles acceptance. For international travel, JCB runs periodic promotional cashback offers.

If you travel to Japan or Southeast Asia, watch for JCB international spend promotions. They have historically offered 5-10% cashback on certain merchant categories.

The downsides to know

Cashback is not bank-transferable. You have to use it through the KreditPe ecosystem. If you want pure bank credit, this is not your card.

The card is issued by YES Bank, which had financial troubles in 2020. YES Bank has since stabilized with RBI intervention and is now operationally sound. But if bank reputation matters to you, this is a consideration.

Credit limit may be conservative for new applicants. KreditPe underwrites based on credit score and income. Expect Rs 50,000-2 lakh initial limits for most applicants.

The app is required for the full benefit. You must link the card to KreditPe's UPI app (not PhonePe or GPay) to get the 3-5% cashback. Regular card swipes earn standard YES Bank reward points, not the enhanced cashback.

Who should get this card

Anyone who pays for small daily expenses through UPI. Autos. Street food. Local shops. Parking. Metro. Groceries.

These transactions add up. At 3-5% back, you are looking at real savings over a year.

If you already have premium cards for big purchases (HDFC Infinia for travel, Regalia Gold for SmartBuy partners), this fills the gap for everything else.

Who should skip this card

If you do not use UPI regularly, this card offers no advantage over standard credit cards.

If you need immediate bank-transferable cashback, the ecosystem lock-in does not work for you.

If you primarily make large purchases (Rs 5,000+) where premium card accelerated categories beat 3-5% flat cashback, stick with your existing cards.

The UPI credit card landscape

Let me compare KreditPe to alternatives:

  • Kiwi Credit Card: 1-1.5% UPI cashback (up to 5% for Neon members), instant bank withdrawal, but requires app usage
  • HDFC Tata Neu Infinity: 1.5% on UPI, 5% on Tata ecosystem, good for Tata loyalists
  • Axis SuperMoney: Up to 3% on UPI through their app, but app-specific
  • AU Zenith+: 2% on UPI, established bank backing

KreditPe offers the highest baseline UPI reward at 3% without subscription. The 5% milestone tier is best-in-class for high UPI spenders.

The math on a typical month

Assume Rs 30,000 monthly spend through KreditPe UPI:

  • Rs 25,000 at 5%: Rs 1,250 cashback
  • Rs 5,000 at 3% (before hitting milestone): Rs 150 cashback
  • Total: Rs 1,400 monthly cashback

Annually: Rs 16,800 cashback on Rs 3.6 lakh spend.

If you redeem that cashback for discounted vouchers at 50% off, you are getting Rs 25,000+ in purchasing power.

For a lifetime free card, that is exceptional value.

How to maximize

  1. Route all small purchases through KreditPe UPI. Autos, groceries, meals, parking, metro. Everything.

  2. Hit the Rs 25,000 monthly threshold every month. This bumps you to 5%.

  3. Redeem cashback strategically for vouchers you actually need. The additional discount compounds your effective return.

  4. Keep your premium cards for large purchases where accelerated categories (travel, electronics, partner brands) beat 5% flat.

  5. Track the JCB international promotions if you travel abroad.

Compare this with other free cards if you want alternatives without annual fees.

The UPI credit card space is finally getting competitive. About time.
