Meet Aryaman. Analyst at Wells Fargo. Started working, got an HDFC salary account, received a Diners Privilege card.
When he needed a second card for travel, Amex Platinum Travel and Axis Atlas were not accepting applications. HDFC was making upgrades difficult.
So he got HSBC TravelOne.
Four months later, he had extracted 25% value from his spends.
Here is exactly how that math worked, and how you can replicate it.
The card: HSBC TravelOne
HSBC TravelOne launched in January 2025 as HSBC's answer to the premium travel card segment. It is positioned against Axis Atlas and HDFC Regalia Gold.
- Annual fee: Rs 4,999 plus GST (waived at Rs 8 lakh annual spend)
- Base earn: 2 reward points per Rs 100 on regular spends
- Accelerated earn: 4 reward points per Rs 100 on flights, travel aggregators, and forex spends
The monthly cap on accelerated earn is 50,000 points (equivalent to Rs 12.5 lakh spend on accelerated categories). That cap is generous enough that most users will never hit it.
The spending breakdown
From September to December 2025, Aryaman spent Rs 4.5 lakh on the card.
- Rs 3.1 lakh went to regular spends earning base points at 2 per Rs 100: 6,200 points
- Rs 1.4 lakh went through HSBC Rewards Marketplace for accelerated points at 4-6 per Rs 100: Approximately 7,000 points
- Milestone bonus at Rs 1.2 lakh spend: Would have required full year
- Welcome bonus: 3,000 points (after spending Rs 1 lakh in first 90 days)
Let me recalculate with actual Rewards Marketplace accelerated rates:
Marketplace bookings earn up to 6x on hotels and 4x on flights. Assuming a mix of hotel and flight bookings at average 5x rate, Rs 1.4 lakh in Marketplace spend earned approximately 28,000 additional points.
Total earned: Approximately 38,000 points.
Wait, that is only 8.4% return
Correct. At face value, 38,000 points on Rs 4.5 lakh is 8.4% if you value each point at Rs 1.
Good but not exceptional. Atlas or well-optimized Regalia Gold spending can match or beat this.
Here is where strategy matters.
The Accor transfer bonus
HSBC runs periodic transfer bonuses to loyalty program partners. In December 2025, they offered a 50% bonus on transfers to Accor Live Limitless.
Aryaman transferred his 38,000 HSBC points to Accor.
38,000 HSBC points became 57,000 Accor points (38,000 base + 19,000 bonus).
This is the key insight. HSBC points have 1:1 transfer ratio to Accor, Marriott, IHG, and other partners. During bonus windows, that ratio effectively becomes 1:1.5.
The Accor valuation
Each Accor point is worth approximately Rs 1.5-2 when redeemed for hotel stays at reasonable properties. Budget redemptions can squeeze more. Premium redemptions might give less per point.
Using Rs 2 per point (achievable at many Accor properties in India and Southeast Asia):
57,000 Accor points = Rs 1,14,000 in hotel stays.
The final math
- Spent: Rs 4.5 lakh
- Card fee paid: Rs 5,900 (assuming first year with no waiver)
- Net spend: Rs 4.56 lakh
Value extracted: Rs 1,14,000 in hotel redemptions
Return: 25%
In four months.
Why HSBC TravelOne works
The card earns 4 points per Rs 100 on flights, travel aggregators, and forex spends. Regular spends get 2 points per Rs 100.
Through the Rewards Marketplace (HSBC's version of SmartBuy), you can earn:
- Up to 6x on hotels
- Up to 4x on flights
- Additional cashback offers with partners
The real value is in transfer partners. HSBC has 15 airline partners and 5 hotel programs. Most at 1:1 conversion.
The airline partners include:
- Air India (Star Alliance)
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (Star Alliance)
- British Airways Executive Club (Oneworld)
- Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Oneworld)
- Emirates Skywards
- Etihad Guest
- Air France-KLM Flying Blue
- Japan Airlines Mileage Bank
- Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus
- Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles
- United MileagePlus
- Qantas Frequent Flyer
The hotel partners include:
- Accor Live Limitless (1:1)
- Marriott Bonvoy (1:1)
- IHG One Rewards (1:1)
- Wyndham Rewards (1:1)
- Shangri-La Circle (5:1 - less favorable)
The transfer bonus strategy
HSBC has run multiple transfer bonuses since launching the rewards program in April 2025:
- 50% bonus to Accor (December 2025)
- Various airline partner bonuses at different times
When Accor runs 50% transfer bonuses, the effective return on hotel bookings can hit extraordinary levels.
Let me calculate the extreme case:
- Book a hotel through Rewards Marketplace at 6x points: 24% base earn
- Transfer to Accor at 1:1.5 (during 50% bonus): Effective 36% return
- Redeem at good Accor property at Rs 2 per point valuation: Final 72% return
72% return on hotel bookings is not a typo. It requires perfect execution across multiple variables, but it demonstrates why the HSBC TravelOne is getting attention from the credit card optimization community.
How to replicate this
Step 1: Get the card. Annual fee is Rs 4,999 plus GST which gets waived at Rs 8 lakh annual spend. HSBC is more selective than some banks but approves applications reasonably if you have good income and credit profile.
Step 2: Use the Rewards Marketplace for travel bookings. The accelerated points on flights and hotels significantly boost your earn rate. The marketplace includes price match guarantee and price drop protection features that protect against overpaying.
Step 3: Watch for Accor transfer bonuses. HSBC runs these periodically, often in Q4 around travel season. Transfer your points during the bonus window.
Step 4: Redeem strategically. Accor has properties ranging from budget (ibis) to luxury (Fairmont, Sofitel). Target mid-tier properties where your points get maximum room night value.
The welcome benefits
When you get HSBC TravelOne, the current welcome offer includes:
- Rs 1,000 cashback on downloading the app and spending Rs 10,000 in first 30 days
- Rs 3,000 Postcard Hotels voucher
- 3 months EazyDiner Prime
- 3,000 bonus reward points on Rs 1 lakh spend in first 90 days
The total welcome package is worth approximately Rs 7,000-8,000. That covers the first year annual fee with room to spare.
Lounge access
- 6 domestic lounge visits per year
- 4 international lounge visits per year (through LoungeKey)
This is modest compared to unlimited access cards but adequate for occasional travelers. The lounge visits do not appear to require quarterly spend thresholds like some HDFC cards.
The comparison to competitors
HSBC TravelOne vs Axis Atlas: Atlas has higher regular earn (2 EDGE Miles per Rs 100 = effectively 4 Accor points via 1:2 transfer). But Atlas has transfer caps and is not accepting new applications. TravelOne has no transfer caps and is available.
HSBC TravelOne vs Regalia Gold: Regalia Gold requires portal usage for accelerated earn. TravelOne gives accelerated earn on direct airline and travel aggregator purchases. Regalia Gold has better milestone vouchers. TravelOne has better transfer partners.
HSBC TravelOne vs Amex Platinum Travel: Amex PT has better milestone structure for exactly Rs 4 lakh spend. TravelOne has better transfer partner flexibility. Both are solid choices for different spending patterns.
Who should get this card
- You book flights and hotels regularly and want points that transfer to multiple airline and hotel programs.
- You can wait for transfer bonus windows to maximize redemption value.
- You are shut out of Atlas and want a similar value proposition.
- You travel internationally and want forex spend to earn accelerated points.
Who should skip this card
- You want simple cashback without tracking transfer bonuses.
- You primarily shop on portals where Regalia Gold's 5x categories beat TravelOne's base earn.
- You already have Atlas and maximize it effectively.
If you are evaluating travel cards, compare HSBC TravelOne with other options based on your spending pattern.
This is what strategic credit card use looks like. Not flashy cards. Smart timing.
