Most people think free flights and luxury hotels require lakhs in credit card spending.
They are wrong.
I booked a room at Prestige Golf Shire that retails for close to Rs 30,000. My total cost: Rs 7,540.
Here is how this works, and how you can replicate it with even better results.
Understanding the HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card
The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy is India's first co-branded hotel credit card. It launched in 2023 and has quietly become one of the best value cards in the market for a very specific reason.
- Joining fee: Rs 3,000 plus 18% GST (Rs 3,540 total)
- Annual fee: Same Rs 3,540
What you get on day one: A Free Night Award worth up to 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
That single benefit is worth more than the joining fee. A 15,000 point Marriott redemption can get you a room at properties like Fairfield by Marriott Goa, Four Points by Sheraton in various Indian cities, or Courtyard by Marriott in tier 2 cities. These rooms typically cost Rs 8,000-12,000 per night on cash rates.
The Free Night Award mechanics
The Free Night Award (FNA) you receive has a redemption cap of 15,000 points. But here is what makes it powerful. You can top up the FNA with additional points from your Marriott Bonvoy account to book rooms that cost more than 15,000 points.
If you have 10,000 additional points, you can book a room worth 25,000 points. That opens up properties like Westin, Sheraton, and higher-tier Marriott hotels.
The FNA is credited to your Marriott Bonvoy account within 8-12 weeks of your first transaction or fee payment. It is valid for one year from issuance.
The Amex point purchase hack
Here is what most people miss. If you have any Amex card, you can purchase up to 10,000 Membership Rewards points every year for Rs 4,000.
This is not advertised anywhere on the Amex website. You have to message Amex through the app chat or call customer service. They will process the purchase.
The conversion math: Rs 4,000 for 10,000 points works out to Rs 0.40 per point.
Now here is where it gets interesting. Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio.
So Rs 4,000 gets you 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
Stacking the benefits
- HDFC Marriott Bonvoy welcome benefit: 15,000 points (via Free Night Award)
- Amex purchased points: 10,000 points
- Total: 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
Total cost: Rs 7,540 (Rs 3,540 card fee + Rs 4,000 point purchase)
With 25,000 points, you can book rooms at properties that typically cost Rs 15,000-30,000 per night. Westin Goa, Le Meridien Jaipur, Sheraton Grand Bangalore at Whitefield. All become accessible.
The Silver Elite upgrade
The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card gives you automatic Silver Elite status upon card activation. You also receive 10 Elite Night Credits every year just for holding the card.
Silver Elite is the first tier of Marriott Bonvoy elite status. The benefits include:
- 10% bonus points on paid stays
- Priority late checkout when available
- Room upgrades when available
That last point is what turned my 25,000 point standard room booking into a higher category room at no extra cost. Silver Elite upgrades are not guaranteed, but they happen more often than you would expect at properties that are not fully booked.
The milestone benefits most people miss
The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card has milestone benefits that can earn you additional Free Night Awards throughout the year.
- Spend Rs 6 lakh in a card anniversary year: 1 additional FNA (15,000 points)
- Spend Rs 9 lakh: Another FNA
- Spend Rs 15 lakh: Yet another FNA
With the joining FNA plus milestone FNAs, you can theoretically get up to 4 Free Night Awards per year. That is 4 free hotel nights at properties worth 15,000 points each.
The caveat: You need significant spend to unlock the higher milestones. But if your spending naturally hits these thresholds, the card becomes absurdly valuable.
The 12 lounge access benefit
Unlike most cards that require minimum quarterly spends for lounge access, the HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card gives you 12 complimentary domestic and 12 international lounge visits per year without any spend requirement.
This alone is worth Rs 12,000-15,000 if you travel frequently. Most cards in this fee range cap lounge access at 4-8 visits or require Rs 10,000+ quarterly spend to activate the benefit.
Earn rates on ongoing spend
The card earns Marriott Bonvoy points, not HDFC reward points. This is important.
- At Marriott properties: 8 points per Rs 150 spent (approximately 5.3% if you value each point at Rs 1)
- Travel, dining, entertainment: 4 points per Rs 150 spent (2.67%)
- All other spends: 2 points per Rs 150 spent (1.33%)
The earn rates are not exceptional for general spend. But if you stay at Marriott properties regularly, the 8 points per Rs 150 plus Silver Elite bonus points make this card very attractive.
Exclusions to watch out for
Marriott Bonvoy points are not earned on:
- Wallet loads
- Gift card or voucher purchases
- EMI transactions
- Fuel transactions
The wallet and voucher exclusions matter. You cannot game this card by buying Amazon vouchers or loading Paytm wallet. The points are earned only on genuine purchases.
Current promotions worth knowing
As of late 2025, HDFC Bank is running promotions for new cardholders:
- First year free if you apply before specific deadlines
- Rs 1,500 gift voucher on first eligible spend within 45 days
These promotions come and go. Check the current offer before applying.
The real strategy: Card stacking
Credit card rewards are not about spending more. They are about spending smarter.
The HDFC Marriott Bonvoy card costs Rs 3,540 per year. The free night certificate alone exceeds that fee in value. Everything else is gravy.
Pair this with an Amex card for the point purchase option. Pair it with a high-earn card like HDFC Regalia Gold or Axis Atlas for your general spending. Use the Marriott card specifically for:
- Marriott hotel stays (8x points)
- Travel bookings (4x points)
- Dining and entertainment (4x points)
For everything else, use your higher-earn general spend card.
Who should get this card
- You stay at hotels 3+ times per year and want to reduce accommodation costs
- You value Marriott Bonvoy points over general cashback
- You can take advantage of the lounge access benefit
- You travel for leisure and can plan stays around point availability
Who should skip this card
- You rarely stay at hotels
- You prefer instant cashback over points
- You primarily stay at non-Marriott properties (Taj, Oberoi, ITC, etc.)
- You want a daily driver card with high earn rates on all categories

The key insight: Stack benefits across cards. Most people use one card for everything. That is leaving money on the table.
